A Japanese convenience store chain is set to add crane games and other coin-op video games to its stores. FamilyMart, which currently operates more than 16,000 stores across Japan, announced the move as part of a reorganisation of how it uses its stores, saying it would close its eat-in spaces and add the games.

The games it will install are smaller than the full-size games found in Japan’s arcades, but are stacked on top of each other saving space. The company says that the addition will also help it to meet the demand from foreign tourists, who enjoy playing the crane games that Japan is famous for. Venues that are set to receive the games are mainly located in urban centres, although the company is looking at adding them to suburban venues which are frequently visited by families. Play will be priced at ¥100 (US$0.64) and around 5,000 are expected to receive the games.
